How to approach greenside Chipping
When it comes to chipping, one of the most overlooked aspects is selecting the right type of shot before you play it, so the best way to select your shot is to imagine you could pick your ball up and throw it from ground level. In the first example, playing to the closest flag, there is not much green to play with and you need to carry the ball further than it will roll; you will need a more lofted club so I’ve used a 58° sand wedge. In the second example, playing to the flag on the far side of the green, you will want to get the ball rolling much more so a less lofted club is needed; I’ve used a 6-iron to play this shot which hits the green quicker and rolls out more.
Both shots can be played in a similar fashion by keeping the hands forward of the clubhead at impact and allowing the loft on the club to hit the ball at the correct height.
